Private 5-Day Marrakech to Fes Desert Tour Day by Day Itinerary

Day 1: Marrakech → High Atlas Mountains → Ait Ben Haddou → Ouarzazate

Start your adventure early as your private driver collects you from your accommodation in Marrakech. From there, head south toward the dramatic High Atlas Mountains. The scenery changes quickly as you gain altitude. Soon, you will cross the famous Tizi n'Tichka Pass at 2,260 metres, the highest paved mountain pass in Morocco. Stop along the way to take in the sweeping panoramic views stretching across the mountain range in every direction.

Next, descend toward the legendary Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site built entirely from traditional earthen clay. This remarkable fortified ksar has served as a filming location for Gladiator, Game of Thrones, and Lawrence of Arabia. Take your time exploring the ancient lanes with your guide and climb to the top for sweeping views of the surrounding valley.

Afterwards, continue to Ouarzazate, widely known as the Gateway to the Sahara. Settle into your hotel, enjoy a well-earned dinner, and rest up for the journey ahead. Overnight in Ouarzazate.

📍 Driving distance: approximately 300 km  ·  Driving time: approximately 4 hr 30 min

Day 2: Ouarzazate → Boutaghrar → Dades Valley

Begin your day with a satisfying breakfast before setting off east along the famous Route of a Thousand Kasbahs. First, pass through the Skoura Oasis, where ancient palm groves line the road on both sides. Then, continue through the Valley of Roses, a region renowned for its spectacular rose harvest each spring and the extraordinary fragrance that fills the air along the roadside.

From there, make your way to the charming village of Boutaghrar, nestled deep in the heart of the Dades Valley. Once you arrive, take time to explore the dramatic Dades Gorge nearby. Over centuries, natural erosion has sculpted the red rock cliffs into extraordinary and almost surreal formations.

As the afternoon light softens, settle into your comfortable guesthouse positioned directly among the gorge formations. Enjoy a peaceful dinner with canyon views all around you. Overnight in Dades Valley.

📍 Driving distance: approximately 150 km  ·  Driving time: approximately 2 hr 45 min

Day 3: Dades Valley → Todra Gorge → Merzouga Desert Camp

After breakfast, set off toward one of Morocco's most breathtaking natural wonders. Upon arriving at the Todra Gorge, step out of the vehicle and immediately feel the extraordinary scale of the place. Sheer rock walls rise an astonishing 300 metres on either side of the narrow riverbed. Take a short walk through the canyon and pause to admire the remarkable light filtering between the cliffs above.

Following your visit, continue east through an ever-changing desert landscape. Along the way, pass through small Berber villages and lush palm groves. Gradually, the golden dunes of Erg Chebbi appear on the horizon as you approach Merzouga.

In the late afternoon, mount a camel and begin your trek into the Sahara as the sun starts to descend. The colors of the dunes shift from pale gold to deep amber with every passing minute. Arrive at your traditional Berber desert camp and enjoy a delicious dinner under an extraordinary sky, followed by live Gnawa music around the campfire. Tonight you sleep in the heart of the Sahara. Overnight at Erg Chebbi desert camp.

📍 Driving distance: approximately 215 km  ·  Driving time: approximately 3 hr 30 min

Day 4: Sahara Sunrise → Explore Merzouga → Hotel in Merzouga

Rise before dawn and climb the nearest dune on foot to witness one of the most extraordinary sunrises on earth. The Erg Chebbi dune field at first light is cool, completely still, and utterly silent. After breakfast at camp, return to Merzouga by camel or 4x4 where your guide will be ready to begin a full day of exploration.

First, visit a Berber nomad family living on the edge of the dunes and learn about their traditional way of life. Next, head to the remarkable village of Khamlia, home to a unique community of Gnawa musicians descended from sub-Saharan Africa whose hypnotic music and rich culture are unlike anything else you will encounter in Morocco.

From there, visit the fascinating M'Efis salt mine, where local workers have extracted salt from the desert floor for generations using traditional methods. Additionally, if the season allows, your guide will take you to the beautiful seasonal lake near Merzouga, which attracts flamingos and a wide variety of migratory birds. It is a genuinely unexpected and memorable sight in the middle of the Sahara.

As the afternoon draws to a close, transfer to your comfortable hotel in Merzouga for a well-earned shower and a good night's rest before the long drive to Fès tomorrow. Overnight at hotel in Merzouga.

📍 No long driving today  ·  Full day exploring the Merzouga area with your guide

Day 5: Merzouga → Ziz Valley → Cedar Forest → Ifrane → Fès

Rise early and begin the long but richly rewarding journey north toward Fès. First, travel through the stunning Ziz Valley, where a dramatic canyon carved by the Ziz River over thousands of years opens up around you. Along the way, vast palm groves stretch across the valley floor as far as the eye can see.

Next, continue into the Middle Atlas Mountains as the landscape transforms completely. The desert gives way to dense cedar forest and the air turns noticeably cooler. Stop near Azrou to visit the ancient cedar forest, where wild Barbary macaques live freely among the old trees and will often approach visitors with great curiosity.

Before reaching Fès, make a final stop in the charming mountain town of Ifrane. Known for its clean mountain air and unexpected European-style alpine architecture, Ifrane feels remarkably out of place in Morocco, which is exactly what makes it worth seeing. Finally, as the evening approaches, arrive in Fès and transfer comfortably to your riad or hotel. Overnight in Fès.

Why A Private 5-Day Marrakech to Fes Desert Tour.

Most tours between Marrakech and Fès rush through the south in three days. This itinerary does not. Instead, it gives the Sahara the time it deserves. You sleep one night in a traditional desert camp under a sky full of stars and spend a second night in a comfortable hotel in Merzouga. As a result, you have a full day to explore the desert properly rather than simply passing through it.

Furthermore, this route covers the most scenic and varied landscapes in Morocco. In just five days, you will cross high mountain passes, drive through rose valleys and palm oases, walk through canyon gorges, ride camels across golden dunes, and arrive in one of the world's greatest medieval cities.

Above all, this tour is private. Your vehicle, your driver, your schedule. If you want to stop for a photograph, you stop. If you want to linger somewhere longer, you linger. That flexibility is what makes the difference between a good trip and an unforgettable one.

Who Is This Tour For

This tour is ideal for travelers who want to experience the full dramatic contrast of Morocco in a short time. It suits couples, solo travelers, small groups, and families with teenagers who are comfortable with longer driving days in exchange for extraordinary scenery.

It also works beautifully as a one-way private transfer between Marrakech and Fès for travelers continuing their trip north. Additionally, this tour is well suited to photographers, nature lovers, and anyone who wants to experience authentic Berber culture up close.

If you have already visited Marrakech and want to venture beyond the city into the wider and wilder Morocco, this is the perfect next journey.

How We Select Accommodations

Every property on this tour is hand-picked by our team. We visit each accommodation personally before recommending it to our guests. We look for properties that are clean, comfortable, well located, and genuinely reflective of the region they sit in. We do not book the cheapest option. Equally, we do not book luxury hotels for the sake of a star rating.

In Ouarzazate, you will stay in a well-appointed hotel close to the main sights. In the Dades Valley, your guesthouse sits directly among the rock formations of the gorge. In the Sahara, your first night is at a carefully selected mid-range desert camp with private tents, real beds, and en-suite facilities. Your second night is in a comfortable hotel in Merzouga with a proper shower and a good rest before the long drive to Fès.

If you have specific requirements or preferences, simply let us know and we will do our best to accommodate them.

Our Professional Driver-Guides

Your driver-guide is not simply someone who gets you from A to B. They are your companion throughout the journey, your local expert, and often the person you will remember most from the trip. All of our driver-guides are Moroccan, born and raised in the regions they drive through. They speak English fluently and hold professional tourism licenses.

Furthermore, they know when to talk and when to let the landscape speak for itself. They know the best spots to stop for photographs, the most authentic places to eat, and the stories behind every ksar, gorge, and mountain pass along the route.

In addition, all vehicles are modern, air-conditioned, and maintained to a high standard. Your comfort and safety on the road are always the first priority.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this tour suitable for first-time visitors to Morocco?

Absolutely. In fact, this is one of the most popular tours among first-time visitors. Your private driver-guide handles all logistics, navigation, and local knowledge so that you can focus entirely on enjoying the journey.

How comfortable is the desert camp?

The desert camp we use at Erg Chebbi is a carefully selected mid-range property with private tents, real beds with proper mattresses, and en-suite bathroom facilities. On the second night, you stay in a comfortable hotel in Merzouga with a private room and proper shower.

Can the itinerary be customised?

Yes, entirely. This itinerary is a starting point, not a fixed schedule. If you want to add an extra night somewhere, skip a stop, or adjust the pace, simply let us know and we will redesign the tour around your preferences.

What is the best time of year to do this tour?

The best months are October through April. March and April are particularly beautiful as the Valley of Roses comes into bloom along the route. Summer months can be extremely hot in the Sahara, with temperatures regularly exceeding 40°C.

Is Day 5 a very long drive?

Day 5 is the longest driving day at approximately 470 km and 7 to 8 hours including stops. However, the stops at Azrou and Ifrane break the journey naturally and make the day feel much shorter than the distance suggests.

Do I need to tip the driver-guide?

Tips are not included in the tour price and are not mandatory. However, they are genuinely appreciated. If you have enjoyed your experience, a tip of 100 to 200 MAD per day is a common and generous gesture.
